1st BSM Retreat, 29.05. – 31.05.08

  on Joch

The first retreat organized by two of our students led us to Parpan, a small village located in the Swiss Alps. Accompanied by Takashi Ishikawa (ETH Zurich), Irmgard Sinning (University of Heidelberg) and Richard Henderson – former head of LMB in Cambridge – we spent two marvellous days discussing each others projects during talks and poster sessions. Being just 20 people we could benefit from a highly familiar atmosphere. We very much enjoyed talking to our main speakers and listening to their stories and advice, especially by one beer in hand at evenings! Another highlight was the hiking trip to “Churer Joch” from which we enjoyed an impressive bird-view of Chur far below.

After the retreat, we received a very positive feedback from the speakers as well as the students. All the participants enjoyed the interaction, both scientifically and personally. Lot of new ideas were triggered and knowledge was shared. We agreed that we need to continue to organize such annual retreats, and we would like to see more and more students joining our PhD program and the retreat.

2nd BSM Retreat, 04.09. – 06.09.09

  Filzbach

This year's retreat took place in a small village called Filzbach overlooking the Walen lake. It was once again a valuable opportunity for the PhD students from various structural biology fields to get to know each other and present their own work. In a very stimulating atmosphere, we enjoyed participating in scientific discussions and exchanging knowledge with other students and well-known invited speakers. This year we had the pleasure to welcome among us Prof. Roland Beckmann (LMU Munich), Prof. Patrick Cramer from Gene Center Munich, David Neuhaus, group leader at world-famous LMB in Cambridge, and Prof. Raimund Dutzler from University of Zurich.
